3 charged with animal abuse after dog forced to eat coins, thumbtacks for months: authorities

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WBNG/Gray News) — Three people are facing charges stemming from an animal abuse case in New York.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office said it received a tip last month about possible animal abuse taking place at a residence on Antler Road.

A sheriff’s deputy reported finding that Tracey Itjen, 30, had been force-feeding a small dog coins and thumbtacks for months, dating back to June.

Itjen was arrested for aggravated cruelty to animals. She was booked into the Chemung County Jail. Authorities said she is also facing a charge for probation violation.

Investigators said Douglas Itjen, 69, and Darlene Itjen, 67, were also arrested in the case for torturing and injuring animals while failing to provide proper nourishment.

Three dogs were ultimately removed from the residence by the Southern Tier Animal Control.
