4-year-old who was autistic and nonverbal found dead in creek after wandering from home
HOPKINS, Minn. (KARE) – A 4-year-old boy who was autistic and nonverbal was found dead in a Minnesota creek after he wandered away from his apartment.
The boy was identified as Waeys Mohamed.
At a press conference inside the Hopkins Fire Department with more than 100 community members listening, Police Capt. Craig Kreiling confirmed what many feared.
Kreiling said they believe the death was an accidental drowning, but investigators will “do our due diligence and work with our partners to determine his exact cause of death.”
Waeys disappeared on Sunday morning after he wandered away from his apartment. Following a search, his body was found in the Minnehaha Creek about 500 yards from his apartment on Monday.
“We have evidence that Waeys left his apartment building on his own accord. And there is no room to try to blame anybody else right now. This is a horrible tragic accident from everything we have been able to determine,” Kreiling said.
Family friends set up a GoFundMe page for Waeys’ family to pay for his funeral.
