LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Federal authorities arrested several people after a major drug trafficking bust happened on Saturday.

U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner said nine people that are in federal custody are connected to a drug operation that spanned from Detroit, Michigan to Louisville.

He said federal authorities seized more than 70 pounds of meth and more than one kilogram of fentanyl in searches across Louisville and Detroit on Saturday. Agents also found 12 guns; he said five of them were believed to be stolen.

Jim Scott, the special agent in charge with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Louisville, said during the Jefferson County searches they also found 1.6 kilograms of cocaine.

“Under recent years, serious offenses were not always charged to the full extent,” Bumgarner said. “Under this justice department, that directive has changed. We will charge the most serious, readily provable offense every time, without exception.”

The U.S. attorney’s office said Louisville Metro Police started the investigation, and partnered with the DEA and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Louisville.

Bumgarner said lives were saved because of this work, and the suspects face 10-year minimum sentences if convicted.
