6-month-old baby missing after being taken in Clayton County, as police extensively search neighborhood

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A 6-month-old baby was taken in Clayton County early Sunday and is still missing, police say.

The Clayton County Police Department said officers were called to a location on Valley Hill Road in Riverdale just before 8:30 a.m. for a report of a missing child. The baby, identified as Nnakai Pratt, was reportedly taken in an unknown direction.

As of now, investigators have not named any suspects or released information about a possible vehicle involved. The baby boy weighs 11 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.

Since early Sunday, police activity has centered around an apartment complex on Valley Hill Road. Neighbors said they watched as officers searched multiple units and combed through nearby wooded areas.

Over the course of several hours, Clayton County detectives were seen examining the trunk of a white sedan parked at the scene. That car, along with an SUV, was later towed away as part of the investigation. A K-9 unit was also brought in to search the woods, and surveillance video from a nearby business appeared to show officers following a trail leading away from the apartment complex.

At one point, nearly a dozen police vehicles and a fire truck were on the scene, though most of the emergency crews have since cleared the area.

Several neighbors said they saw the baby’s parents speaking with officers on-site.

“I sure hope that baby ain’t over there in that trunk. I pray that baby ain’t nowhere out here. Cause I have kids,” one woman said.

Some neighbors said they began doing their own digging after noticing the heavy police presence.

“Once we found out, (we) saw all the police activity, we came out started making calls,” said Deondre Johnson, who lives nearby.

Tracy Karch, who also lives in the complex, said she urged officers to search the woods behind a nearby school.

“I asked them, ‘Did you search the woods by the school?’ Because the schools woods are really really dense and there’s drop offs.”

She added, “Neighbors were like, where is the kid? Nothing escapes this neighborhood. They’ll be like, ‘What’s going on?'”

Despite the extensive search, Clayton County Police confirmed late Sunday that Pratt is still considered missing.

“Pratt was placed on GCIC/NCIC as missing,” CCPD said on Facebook, referring to the Georgia Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center. “If you have any information or make contact with Nnakai Pratt, please contact the Clayton County Police Department at 770-477-3747 or dial 911 immediately.”

In a statement to 11Alive, the department added:

A missing child is always treated as a critical and urgent matter. At this time, no additional information is available, but updates will be provided as soon as new and verified details emerge.
