Jay-Z blocked from opening $5.4 billion casino in Times Square

Jay-Z won’t be opening a casino in Times Square after all. The rapper was blocked from its development by the Community Advisory Committee on September 17th.

A bid submitted by Jay’s Roc Nation, SL Green Realty Corporation, and Caesars Entertainment was shut down in a 4-2 vote.

The $5.4 billion plan would have seen the casino located at 1515 Broadway in the same space as the Minskoff Theatre and Viacom.

According to Deadline, Broadway League president Jason Laks said, “This was a vote to protect the magic of Broadway for the one hundred thousand New Yorkers who depend on it for their livelihoods, and for the tens of millions who come from around the world to experience it. A casino can go anywhere, but Broadway only lives here.”

In response, Caesars Palace Times Square said in a statement, “We are disappointed by today’s decision and process. Caesars Palace Times Square was a visionary proposal that aimed to address long-standing challenges through meaningful private investment.”

Hov recently spoke about the benefits of the proposed Manhattan casino, claiming the opening would elevate New York City.

“New York City is the entertainment capital of the world, so the idea of a world class casino here makes perfect sense,” he said. “I’ve always looked at opportunities that can shift culture while uplifting communities, and Caesars Palace Times Square is exactly that.”

He continued, “Partnering with Caesars and SL Green – two organisations that understand real partnership and long-term community investment – gave us the chance to build something bigger than gaming. For me, it’s an extension of culture, an extension of the energy and action that makes New York the city it is.”
