Despite her status as one of the most famous women in Hollywood, Julia Roberts has maintained an impressive level of privacy for her three children, Hazel, Phinnaeus, and Henry. The twins and their younger brother Henry were raised between a handful of properties owned by the Eat Pray Love actress and her husband, Danny Moder, including homes in Malibu, Hawai’i, New York City, San Francisco, and Taos, New Mexico.

Setting aside the family’s half a dozen homes, Roberts’s kids grew up feeling, well, normal. So normal, in fact, that they apparently didn’t realize Roberts worked because she was home so much. “I don’t think they will ever have a true sense of [my fame],” she told Oprah Winfrey for Harper’s Bazaar in 2018.

Roberts and Moder were married in a private ceremony on her 82-acre ranch in Taos, New Mexico in 2002 following her divorce from Lyle Lovett. The actress credits the nuptials as catalyzing a “seismic shift” in her life.

“Getting married to Danny…was the first, like, my life will never be the same in the most incredible, indescribable way,” she told Gwyneth Paltrow in a 2018 Goop podcast interview. “The best decision I ever made in my entire life was to hitch my wagon to Danny Moder.”

The happy couple welcomed their three children in quick succession following their wedding. At that point, Roberts had already starred in enough films to secure her status as one of Hollywood’s finest talents. Her laundry list of accomplishments included the ultimate prize: an Academy Award for her starring role in Erin Brockovich, which came out one year before their nuptials, in 2001.

“By the time we had kids, I had accomplished things and felt secure about that part of my life,” Roberts explained in an interview with the Wall Street Journal in 2014. “I was so joyful, moving into the family phase of my life in a sincere way.”

Twins Hazel and Henry arrived on November 28, 2004, two years after the couple’s wedding on Roberts’s New Mexico ranch. Roberts was filming Ocean’s 12 with George Clooney during her pregnancy, and recalled being treated as if she was “made of glass,” she told Stephen Colbert.”They just wanted to dress me in cotton balls and usher me…It was really, really charming.”

While Hazel was given an “old-fashioned name,” Phinnaeus was named simply because Moder wanted to name his son Finn, which Roberts thought sounded like a nickname. “So I said we had to have a proper name, and then we can call him Finn,” she explained.

Fast forward two decades, and the twins have since become college students. Roberts told Jimmy Fallon she “immediately” made supporting their schools her “entire life,” adding, “I wear the colors…I do the whole thing.”

When it comes to her daughter, Hazel, the young teen is just beginning to follow in her mother’s footsteps. She landed a tiny role in Roberts’s 2016 movie Mother’s Day and made her red carpet debut at Cannes Film Festival in 2021 with her dad. “So lucky this girl is my daughter…and that she takes these awesome selfies on my phone,” Moder joked on Instagram. “Staying gnarly.”

Roberts also admitted to saving up her and Moder’s love letters so that they can one day share them with Hazel. “It’s something Danny and I have always done,” she said in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning. “The first letter he ever wrote me, which was seven pages long, I still have it tucked away. One day I’ll show it to Hazel and say, ‘That’s what you’re looking for.'”

Henry

On June 18, 2007, three years after the twins’ birth, the final member of the Roberts-Moder family arrived. The Pretty Woman actress later told CBS Sunday Morning that “the life that I’ve built with my husband” is a “dream come true.” Henry has since become an avid skateboarder, much like his older brother. Moder happily called him “one cool kid” on Instagram.

Roberts, too, has taken to Instagram to celebrate her youngest son. For his milestone birthday last summer, she wrote: “Incredible that this baby is now a towering 17 year old wonder! Happy Birthday beautiful Henry.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the teen has mixed feelings about the departure of his two older siblings for college: “I think it’s a good 50/50 split,” Roberts said in the Fallon interview. “He’s loving it. And I think he misses his people.”
