Questlove confirms D’Angelo posthumous album

Questlove has revealed a posthumous D’Angelo album is set to be released following the neo-soul icon’s death last month.

The Richmond singer passed away on October 14th at the age of 51 after a private battle with pancreatic cancer. D’Angelo left behind a phenomenal catalogue of music, but it appears that his death won’t be the end of his musical releases.

During Questlove’s appearance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame over the weekend, the Roots drummer was asked to speak on D’Angelo’s unreleased music.

“You’ll see soon,” he told The National Desk, followed by a laugh. “But you know, with him, it’s always the sound of yesterday but for the future, and this record’s no different. So when it comes out, you’ll know.”

Questlove famously collaborated with D’Angelo across his classic 2000 album, Voodoo. They also worked together on the follow-up, Black Messiah, in 2014. Together, they were part of the Soulquarians collective.

It’s no secret that D’Angelo was working on new music before his death. In September 2024, Raphael Saadiq revealed he was collaborating with him.

“D’s in a good space,” he told Rolling Stone. “He’s excited. He’s like, ‘You gotta play bass. I’ve got this track. I’m telling you, you got to get on it. It got your name all over it.’ He’s working on six pieces right now and he seems super excited.”

Speaking on a specific song with Q-Tip, Saadiq said, “I think it’s going to be a record on D’Angelo’s new album when it comes out, a record that we all did together. Lynwood Rose lives. I’m playing bass, D’s playing, me and D is singing backgrounds. It’s funky as hell, too. It’s like, D is a bad boy. It’s aged well. Good music ages well.”

Following D’Angelo’s death, Questlove paid tribute in an essay. “D’Angelo, to me, was one of the last pure artists in Black music,” he wrote. “I know we sold the mysterious seriousness well, but the truth is – we were a silly bunch.”

He also revealed that he was in the hospital with D’Angelo in his final weeks, describing the time as “the best for our friendship.”
