Mom says 13-year-old son who drowned after being pushed off a pier may have been bullied

MARINETTE, Wis. (WBAY/Gray News) – The mother of a 13-year-old boy with autism who died over the weekend after drowning in Wisconsin is speaking out, saying her child may have been bullied.

Officials said a 16-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man could face charges after Jakob Bowerman was pushed off of Government Pier in Marinette.

Authorities said Jakob was pushed off the pier last Wednesday afternoon. He died Saturday night from his injuries after being on life support for several days.

Jakob’s mother, Taylor Singer, now wants to share her story and spread an important message.

Singer said police showed up at her house last Wednesday to tell her there had been an incident at Government Pier involving her son.

“Right when I went to go pull in, there were cops there and everything, and I thought ‘Hmm, that’s weird,’ you know,” she said. “And two seconds later, they called me, and they said that Jakob was in a drowning accident. So, then everything just all clicked together. I was just down there watching everything, but it was actually my son who was there.”

Police told Singer they found camera footage of Jakob being pushed into the Menominee River by a 16-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man.

Jakob was afraid of deep water and didn’t know how to swim.

He was flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, where he was on life support for several days.

“It’s something that no mother should ever have to go through, you know what I mean,” Singer said. “Like, to see your son hooked up to all these machines, a tube in their throat. He was having seizures, his body was jerking around constantly, and I would lie on him and try and get the jerking to stop, and they just wouldn’t stop.”

Singer said Jakob was bullied his whole life for having autism. She said he was killed after the two people had bullied him by pushing him into the water.

“Kids, they just need to be nice. There’s no reason to pick on people. There’s no reason to think it’s funny to push kids off a pier,” she said. “I don’t know if they think it was funny or what. But we need to do better with our kids and teach them to respect one another.”

Singer said she does not want something as horrific as what happened to her son to happen to another family and that no child deserves to be bullied.

The two suspects police said were involved in Jakob’s drowning have not yet been named.
