PHOENIX, Ariz. (KPHO/KTVK/CNN/CNN Newsource/WKRC) – A man was arrested after he reportedly delivered his girlfriend’s body to law enforcement.
An man was taken into custody after he delivered his deceased girlfriend’s body to a police department in the State of Arizona early Tuesday morning.
According to KPHO, 36-year-old Josue Barreras Anaya was identified as the suspect. The victim was identified as 32-year-old Jessica Guzman, per the report.
Authorities reported that the man transported the corpse in the bed of his truck. The incident has left residents in shock.
“It’s crazy just waking up and something like this happening it’s just heartbreaking,” neighbor Itzajanna Diaz said when speaking with KPHO’s reporters.
The original crime scene is believed to be a pink-colored home in Phoenix. Around 5 a.m., the man drove the body to the nearby police station.
“That’s a really unexpected thing to do — you kill someone and take the body to the police station,” Diaz told the station.
“Maybe his conscience was telling him, you know, that he had to report it or turn himself in,” Diaz told the outlet.
Investigators noted that the victim showed obvious signs of trauma and was found dead in the truck parked at the Maryvale precinct.
“Maybe he thought they could help him, and maybe she was still alive. Maybe it was the heat of the moment. It’s just crazy,” Diaz told KPHO’s reporters.
The victim’s older brother spoke to KPHO and said Guzman had been suffering through a domestic violence situation with the suspect, who was described as her on-and-off boyfriend.
“We all tried to wake her up and make her see the danger that she was in, and he just somehow, some way kept on weaseling his way back into her life,” the victim’s sibling said when speaking to the station, adding that she could never escape the abuse, isolation, and control.
The man added that her family had requested welfare checks, but said nothing seemed to help, KPHO reported.
According to the station, the suspect told authorities that he kept a handgun under his pillow, and said that at some point it fell on the ground while they were asleep. Barreras Anaya said he was woken up by the noise, and that he and Guzman began arguing because she thought he had dropped his cell phone. The suspect said Guzman tried to grab the gun as he picked it up, and that two shots were fired. While searching the truck, authorities reportedly found a pillow soaked in blood with a bullet hole through it, according to the report.
Barreras Anaya was arrested and has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder, per KPHO. He is being held without bond, according to the report.
