7-year-old boy missing for hours after leaving Newton County home without shoes found safe

An urgent search was prompted after the boy’s guardian reported him missing after not hearing from him for hours while she was working from home.

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — An urgent search for a missing 7-year-old boy in Newton County thankfully ended with good news on Tuesday night.

Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office initially said that the boy was last seen in his home at 1 p.m.

The boy’s guardian said she works from home and the boy is homeschooled, but she noticed that he was gone after calling for him and him not answering several hours after he was last seen in the home. That’s when she called the Newton County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday evening.

The concern for his disappearance was elevated due to the weather overnight. Temperatures are already in the 30s, and they are expected to drop into the upper 20s by the early morning.

Georgia State Patrol searched for the boy with a helicopter up in the area searching near Denny Dobbs Park in Covington. The ground search took place on Freeman Way off Freeman Drive in the Lake Manning subdivision.
