SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has released numbers related to Operation Fentanyl Free America in the Rocky Mountain region, and in Utah, more than 378,000 fentanyl pills were seized during the October operation.

The Rocky Mountain Field Division (RMFD) of the DEA announced the results of the targeted month-long enforcement effort, and in total, the RMFD seized more than one million fentanyl pills, across Colorado, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. The RMFD ranked third in all DEA divisions nationwide for the October operation.

The RMFD was one of 23 domestic field divisions and seven foreign divisions that participated in Operation Fentanyl Free America in October.

In Utah alone during the October operation, around 378,573 fentanyl pills and 1.04 kilograms of fentanyl powder were seized. According to the DEA, one kilogram of powder can be used to make around 500,000 pills.

Additionally, 21 arrests were made, four weapons and over $61,758 were seized. Other drugs were also seized during the operation, including 68.03 kilograms of methamphetamine, one kilogram of heroin, and one kilogram of cocaine.

“Despite nationwide efforts to bring deaths down, and this recent targeted enforcement, fentanyl remains the number one killer of Americans between ages 18 to 45,” DEA RMFD Special Agent in Charge David Olesky said.
