CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — In its second week of Operation Safe Season, CMPD has issued over 300 citations in and around uptown Charlotte compared to over 100 citations last week.

The multi-agency effort, including Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, State Highway Patrol and Homeland Security, is designed to increase police presence and enforcement over the next several weekends in Uptown, and later expand to other areas with repeated violence and crime.

This new initiative was launched on Thursday, Dec. 4, just one day before someone was stabbed on the light rail in Charlotte by someone who was allegedly banned from CATS trains and previously deported.

This weekend, law enforcement conducted 224 traffic stops and issued 317 citations. Police say they made 36 arrests, four of which were juveniles. Approximately 661 grams of suspected marijuana and over 3 grams of suspected cocaine were seized during the operation. Twenty firearms were also recovered over the weekend.

Mecklenburg County ABC conducted 24 inspections and reported six violations, but officials did not give details on what those violations were.

On a positive note, CMPD’s Central Division reported zero violent crime from 5 p.m. Friday evening to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
