Victorville behavioral therapist charged in child abuse case involving 7-year-old boy with autism
VICTORVILLE, Calif. (KABC) — A Victorville caregiver is facing child abuse charges after the mother of a 7-year-old boy with autism said the man was caught on camera pinching, throwing and choking her son.
“There’s no words for it. There’s no words,” said the woman, who has asked to remain anonymous.
Bryan Espinosa, 25, was arraigned on felony charges for child abuse likely to causing great bodily injury, lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14, and false imprisonment, according to online booking records.
The alleged victim’s mother said Espinosa, an Applied Behavior Analysis therapist, had been working in her home three days a week to assist her autistic child, who is non-verbal, for the past several months.
But recently, she noticed a significant change in her son’s behavior.
“I noticed his behavior getting worse, (having tantrums) for four to six hours,” said the mother, who claims these were behaviors he’d never experienced before. “Fighting me, more aggressive, he wasn’t very violent at all (before), and I’m learning now it’s that he was defending himself while working with this individual.”
Then she said earlier this month, she was watching video on a camera she had placed in her kitchen showing what appeared to be Espinosa biting her child, but she couldn’t tell for sure.
That’s when she said she installed a hidden camera in the bathroom that her son used. She also began recording video on the camera that was set up in her kitchen, that she previously hadn’t paid much attention to before the alleged biting incident.
After reviewing the video from just one day, Sept. 16, she alleges that Espinosa choked her son on the couch, pinched him while appearing to assist him with an assignment, shoved him across the room, threatened to hit him with a cell phone and grabbed his neck while in the bathroom.
She said she called the police immediately. After reviewing her videos and conducting follow-up interviews, Espinosa was placed under arrest.
“It’s a betrayal,” the boy’s mother said. “I cooked breakfast (for him) every morning, he was welcome to it. He was like a friend of the family. But I want him in jail for a very long time.”
