The nominations for the 2026 Oscars are finally out, and, as always, they have sparked intense discussions amongst film buffs who have been rooting for their personal favorites throughout the awards season. Heated debates are a natural consequence of the announcement, which heralds the end of another awards season in less than two months on the night of the Oscars.

The snubs and surprises among the 2026 Oscar nominations have triggered disagreements and approving nods from the film community, especially because the most beloved movie of the year, Sinners, broke the record for the most nominations earned by a single film. Horror was the best movie genre of 2025, and the Academy is acknowledging it, despite years of ignoring it.

However, one of the most surprising success stories of this awards season has been cut short by the announcement of the Oscar nominations. The Academy Awards have a long history of delivering upsets, and this isn’t an especially egregious instance in perspective, but it feels surprising, given how much traction the movie has been gaining over the past few weeks.

Sorry, Baby Received No Oscar Nominations

Eva Victor’s directorial debut feature, Sorry, Baby, also written by them, follows Agnes, also played by Eva Victor, who survives a sexual assault attempt at the hands of her academic advisor. Unfolding in chapters, it follows her journey of grappling with her trauma and healing from it, exploring how mundane experiences cause setbacks, and comfort is found in unexpected places.

Sorry, Baby is not typical tragic fare, as it doesn’t wallow in sorrow. It offers an authentic perspective that is life-affirming and optimistic in its outlook but fully aware of the repercussions of experiencing such trauma. Instead of taking a sensationalist route, Eva Victor has crafted a grounded narrative that exudes empathy for anyone who can relate with the protagonist.

Despite rave reviews for Sorry, Baby throughout the year, it has been snubbed by the Academy in all possible categories. Eva Victor deserves recognition for their behind-the-scenes work both as a screenwriter and a director. Their passionate, humane, warm, composed, and thorough performance as Agnes is also worthy of accolades. I’d argue the movie deserves a Best Picture nod too.

Eva Victor’s Direction And Writing Won Over Critics

Eva Victor and Sorry, Baby‘s snubs are particularly surprising after the love that they received from the critics. With a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it is one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2025. The patient, empathetic, and nuanced writing and direction were highly praised by major voices in the industry during its festival and theatrical runs.

Sorry, Baby‘s critical reception has mostly been focused on Eva Victor’s screenplay and direction. Her brilliant performance is largely responsible for making the movie compelling. However, it’s the narrative structure that allows the film to explore the deeper, less appreciated aspects of the tumultuous journey of healing, and it’s surprising that Sorry, Baby is receiving no attention from the Oscars.

Sorry, Baby Was Nominated For The Best Actress Golden Globe

The Golden Globe nomination that Eva Victor received in the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical category is proof of the strength of the movie’s campaign in this awards season. Eva’s performance beautifully captures the deafening silence that their character encounters in the aftermath of her trauma and the exhaustion she experiences when her healing journey is constantly disrupted.

Despite a Golden Globe snub in the Best Picture, Comedy or Musical category, I would not have ruled out Sorry, Baby‘s chances of being nominated for the Oscar in the same category. The fact that Sorry, Baby was skipped for all the Oscar categories for the upcoming ceremony makes it a particularly disappointing oversight on the part of the Academy.

Julia Roberts Gave Eva Victor A Shoutout At The Golden Globes

Sorry, Baby has resonated with a large part of its viewership, which is albeit small because it’s a relatively lesser-known independent film. However, most of its fans will rave about how she has managed to capture the experience with a daring authenticity. Sorry, Baby somehow still feels like a warm hug while acknowledging how bumpy a healing journey can be.

Among the fans of the movie is Julia Roberts, who spent some of her time at the Golden Globes mentioning the movie and giving Eva Victor a shoutout. Roberts presented the Best Picture – Musical/Comedy Golden Globe. She was greeted by a standing ovation and turned everyone’s attention to Victor. She asked everyone to watch Sorry, Baby if they hadn’t.

It Is Hard To Justify Sorry, Baby’s Snub After Anora’s Success In 2025

A24 is a major movie studio today. Sorry, Baby clearly won over critics and got endorsed by multiple celebrities. It is widely considered the best independent movie of 2025. So, considering that, among other awards, Anora won the Best Picture Oscar, Sorry, Baby‘s complete snub is particularly disappointing, since there was heavy focus on Anora‘s status as an indie film.

As was revealed later, the cost of Anora‘s Oscar campaign practically jeopardizes the claim. Perhaps the Academy isn’t as keen on indie cinema, although, to its credit, If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You, and especially Train Dreams were acknowledged by the Oscar nominations. It’s still hard to forgive the Academy for overlooking such a beloved film as Sorry, Baby.
