Drivers could keep items in blue envelope for traffic stops

Ask Trooper Steve: Am I under lawful detention when pulled over during a traffic stop?

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A Florida bill could change how some traffic stops play out for drivers on the autism spectrum.

The measure would create a voluntary system in which drivers with autism can keep their license, registration and insurance inside a distinct blue envelope.

When handed to an officer during a traffic stop, it would signal that the driver may experience communication challenges or heightened stress.

The bill has cleared the Senate and heads back to the House for a vote on Thursday.

It would start July 1, if it becomes law.
