Jim Carrey isn’t laughing at the conspiracy theory that he’s been replaced by a clone. The conspiracy theory sparked after Carrey attended the César Awards in Paris, France, on February 26, where he received an honorary award for his contribution to the film and television industry.

After the awards show, Carrey sparked speculation over his physical appearance, with many wondering if he had undergone plastic surgery. More extreme conspiracists spread a theory that he had been replaced by a clone, claiming that his eye color seemed lighter than usual and that he signed autographs with his right hand despite being left-handed. The conspiracy only escalated when makeup artist Alexis Stone suggested that he had transformed into the actor with a now-viral Instagram post with a face mask and a set of fake teeth. “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,” Stone captioned the post.

A source told The Daily Mail in a report on March 2 that Carrey finds the conspiracy more “sad” than funny. “Jim is sad. Not because people are questioning or making fun of his appearance, he’s not worried about that at all. Rather, he is sad that people are stupid,” the insider said. “The world he lives in has people that believe a 64-year-old man is now apparently a clone.”

According to the source, Carrey finds the speculation offensive because he believes the public is suggesting he isn’t acting as himself. “For Jim, this is something he should laugh about, but stupidity like this is a not a laughing matter,” the insider said. “He hates that people aren’t talking about what is actually important.”

Plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Spiegel, who has never treated Carrey, speculated to the Daily Mail that the actor has “100 percent” had Botox injections. “These treatments are amazing when done correctly, but his injector gave him Botox more suitable for a woman’s face, leading to oddly arched eyebrows,” Spiegel said, noting the “unnatural pull in his cheek” could be a result from “threading.”

He also speculated that Carrey could’ve also went under the knife. “This could be from a poorly done facelift,” he said. There’s been no confirmation of cosmetic procedures from Carrey’s team.

Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of France’s César Awards, also confirmed to Variety that the actor himself attended the awards show. “Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation,” he said. “Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words. He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”

He also clapped back at speculation over Carrey’s appearance. “For me, it’s a non-issue. Just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance,” he said.
