the pioneer woman's taco pie recipe

Call it what you want—taco flatbread, taco pizza, or taco pie—this is one easy, highly delicious weeknight meal I guarantee your whole family will love. (Psst: Taco pie is also one of many marvelous Super Bowl snacks. Whip it up during the pre-game show!)

There’s nothing fancy or glamorous about it. It’s essentially crescent roll dough topped with cheese, seasoned beef, more cheese, and all the taco toppings your heart desires. The best part is that it’s ready in just 30 minutes. And if that time is what you find most enticing, here are even more 30-minute meal ideas to make your life easier.

What else can you put on taco pie?

Anything you’d pile on your favorite taco recipes is right here at home. This recipe calls for shredded romaine, diced tomato, sour cream, and cheddar cheese, but you could also sprinkle on black beans, sliced black olives, green onion, or a spoonful of this delicious guacamole or pico de gallo.

Can you make taco pie ahead of time?

You’ll want to wait to assemble the pie until just before serving. However, if you want to work ahead, you can cook the seasoned beef a day ahead and store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat it over low heat on the stove before adding the sour cream, cheddar, and hot sauce. You can also prep your toppings a day in advance and refrigerate them until ready to use.

Ingredients

  • 1 (8-ounce) can refrigerated crescent rolls

  • 1 1/4 cups grated cheddar cheese (about 5 ounces), plus 2 tablespoons for topping

  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1/2 small onion, diced small

  • 1 Tbsp. chili powder

Directions

    1. 1Preheat the oven to 350℉.
    2. 2Unroll the crescent dough and press it into a 9-by-9-inch baking pan, pinching the perforated seams together. The dough will come up the sides of the pan slightly.
    3. 3Sprinkle the dough with a 1/2 cup of the cheddar and bake until golden and the cheese is melted, 12 to 13 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool slightly.
    4. 4Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic, onion, chili powder, cumin, and coriander and cook, stirring occasionally, until the spices are very fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the beef and raise the heat to medium-high. Cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until cooked through and browned, about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the sour cream, ¾ cup of the cheddar, and hot sauce to taste.
    5. 5Remove the crust from the pan and place on a cutting board or serving platter. Top the crust with the meat mixture and garnish with the remaining 2 tablespoons cheddar, the lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. Slice and serve with hot sauce, if desired.
