During a field trip, volunteers from the Dog Rescue Shelter (Serbia) discovered a heartbreaking scene right by the side of the road: a mother dog and her small puppies abandoned in a desolate area where, according to locals, people often “dump” unwanted animals.
A Harsh Life in the Wilderness
The mother dog, with incredible resilience, tried her best to protect her litter right next to a busy road with passing traffic. When the rescue team approached, they witnessed the puppies trying to gnaw on a piece of dry leather just to fight off hunger. Despite being terrified and wary of strangers, the mother dog never left her puppies’ side, demonstrating a sacred and powerful maternal instinct.
Building Trust Through Kindness
To win over the small family, the rescue team prepared fresh food and clean water. Initially, the mother dog was hesitant, but she seemed to sense the good intentions of these strangers. The moment she decided to step closer and allow the volunteers to pet her was when trust was finally established. The rescue team noted: “Dogs can always sense a human’s intentions”.
The Journey to a Safe Haven
Once they were fed, the next challenge was getting the whole family into the vehicle. The mother dog was quite anxious, unsure if her puppies would be coming along. The volunteers skillfully guided her with a leash while gathering all the playful puppies to bring them into the rescue van.
All efforts paid off as the entire dog family was brought safely to the shelter. Here, they will receive medical care, vaccinations, and—most importantly—live in an environment full of love before finding their forever homes.
