There are moments in life when the line between life and death becomes thinner than ever. This was the reality for Toru—a small dog who faced the harshest of trials. When he was first found, Toru was in such a dire state that many believed he wouldn’t survive the night.

The First Small Steps
After receiving timely medical intervention, Toru began taking his first tentative steps toward recovery. Although his body was still very weak and he had to wear a protective cone (halskrause) which caused much discomfort, he started to regain his appetite.
His caregivers noted that Toru was a bit “picky,” turning his nose up at dry kibble but showing great enthusiasm for wet food. To help him take his medication more easily, they cleverly hid his pills inside bits of liver pate—his favorite treat. Even though he was still tired and “groggy” from the effects of his treatments, a spark of life had begun to return to his eyes.
Restless Nights and Devoted Care
The post-operative process was a major challenge for both Toru and his rescuers. The first night back from the clinic was incredibly difficult. To ensure his safety, the whole family decided to sleep in the living room to prevent Toru from accidentally trying to climb the stairs in his wobbly state, which could have led to dangerous falls.
Under the dedicated care of Dominik and the team, Toru slowly adapted to his new life. There were times he woke up in the middle of the night, frustrated by his protective collar, but the patience of those around him helped him push through. Little by little, Toru began drinking more water and stabilizing his eating habits, even if his portions weren’t quite back to normal yet.
Toru – A Symbol of Hope
With each passing day, Toru showed remarkable progress. His steps were no longer shaky, and trust in humans gradually returned to his gaze. The sight of Toru starting to explore his surroundings and wagging his tail to greet new friends was the greatest reward for the relentless rescue efforts.
Toru’s story concludes with a powerful message of compassion. He is no longer the pitiful creature on the brink of death; he has become a true warrior, ready for a new life filled with love.
