A man who yearns is a man…

We all know the saying, and The Romantic by Bruno Mars entails every last word of that sentence. Filled with R&B beats and full of yearning lyrics, this singer perfectly puts into words what every woman, or person, dreams to hear. Mars has proved that he can come back no matter what, with radiant and fun music that automatically puts you in a good mood.

The Romantic is Mars’ latest album, released on Feb. 27th after a more than five-year break from his last album. To say the least, the announcement of this album was a huge deal for fans around the world, with The Romantic Tour selling out instantly. Production even had to make a night two for Detroit, and I made sure to stop my entire biology class so I could have a mere chance at grabbing tickets.

To fully declare a new album was coming up, his newest single, “I Just Might,” was released on Jan. 9th, and made an absolute ruckus in the community. An upbeat, exciting, and easily listenable track to jam to was just what I’d come to love about Mars, and that’s exactly what this song delivered. I honestly think that there was no better choice for the single from the album.

In the past, Mars has gotten hate from people because so many of his tracks include features and other directors’ writing. “I Just Might” seemed like his tiny bit of retaliation, with his own singing and lyrics, and a music video that centers only on him dancing the entire time. I adore this little detail, as it’s something that most fans wouldn’t see, but with context, it’s hilarious.

Back to the yearning… “I Just Might” explains a story of Mars and an anonymous woman dancing, emphasizing that with moves like hers, he’d love to date her. With lyrics like “Play a song for this pretty little lady / ‘Cause if she dance as good as she look right now / I just might, I just might make her my baby,” I have to say, whoever the woman he is talking about is, she’s downright lucky.

As said before, this album is full of Mars talking about a woman he loves, and that he would do anything for. The song that is most apparent of this is “On My Soul.”

“On My Soul” is vastly different from the slow, methodical beats of the song before, “Why You Wanna Fight?” In the song, Mars desires a lady over a danceable rhythm that plays in the background. The addition of this song was one of the biggest reasons the theme of this review is yearning, as it perfectly embodies the feeling. Mars sings, “I really want ya / I wanna give you my name / I’ll forever be yours / Every hour, every night, every day.”

“On My Soul” is an amazing song, and to me, it gives off the vibes compared to some of the best Mars songs, for example, “That’s What I Like,” and “24K Magic.” It’s clear from this track and all the others that take up this album that Mars hasn’t lost his passion for making beautiful music.

Honestly, when I first heard that Mars was coming out of his break to make a full-on album, I was worried. Because of the disappointment that was brought from the other big artists last year, like Sabrina Carpenter’s Manchild and Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl, there was a lingering feeling that this release would be the same. I’m glad that I was extremely, extremely wrong.

If you have a partner, tell them to listen to this album and take some notes. This is how they should treat and talk to you.
