The story began when Lex, a tourist enjoying a vacation in the beautiful Bocas del Toro islands, accidentally stumbled upon a heartbreaking sight on a deserted road. A stray dog lay collapsed by the wayside, her body nothing more than skin stretched over a skeletal frame.

The dog’s skin was raw, red, and severely ulcerated, and her glassy eyes held no spark of hope.
