April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time focused on promoting inclusion, support and understanding for people with autism and their families. One local nonprofit working toward that mission is AJ and the Cool Kids.

AJ and the Cool Kids was founded to create safe, welcoming spaces for children and families affected by autism. Executive Director Tonya Tolson said the organization focuses on programming that builds confidence, creativity and connection.

“We are really about community,” Tolson said. “AJ and the Cool Kids exist to remind children on the spectrum that they are seen, valued and celebrated just as they are.”

The organization continues to expand its offerings, rolling out new educational and social programs aimed at youth and parents alike. Those include interactive events, creative workshops and family-centered activities designed to encourage inclusion beyond April.

“One of our goals is to give families tools and experiences they can carry with them year-round,” Tolson said. “Acceptance shouldn’t stop at the end of the month.”

Tolson also highlighted the group’s book, Father’s Voice, which explores the bond between a father and a child navigating autism. The book is intended to spark conversation and provide encouragement for families facing similar journeys.

“It’s about love, patience, advocacy and raising awareness that fathers are really involved and play a major role in support of autism,” Tolson said. “We also hope it helps families feel less alone.”

Later this year, AJ and the Cool Kids will host a gala to raise awareness and support for its programs. The event will bring together families, supporters and community leaders.
