Julia Roberts is Hollywood – and awards season – royalty. Since she rewrote the red-carpet rulebook in 1990 – arriving at the Golden Globes in an oversized Giorgio Armani men’s suit that stood out in a sea of strapless gowns – it’s fair to say the actress has earned her place amongst the greats. Chalking up an impressive 11 Golden Globe nominations and three wins (Steel Magnolias, Pretty Woman, Erin Brockovich) over the years, her chosen looks to attend one of the biggest nights on the industry calendar have appealed to both the traditionalists and the more avant-garde, showing that Roberts knows there’s more than one way to make a splash on the red carpet.
After a few years of being notably absent from the Golden Globes, this year saw the After The Hunt star return in a full-circle fashion moment, opting once again for Giorgio Armani (albeit a slightly more traditional offering than that ’90s menswear). Dressed in a simple black silk-velvet dress, the actress let her statement accessories do the talking. Combining Armani’s pared-back elegance with a pendant in the shape of a strawberry, this red-carpet moment was a characteristically playful look from the star.
While a less seasoned star might have let the simple silhouette of the dress do the heavy lifting, Roberts never misses an opportunity to be playful with fashion (remember that skirt covered in pictures of her pal George Clooney’s face?) On top of the unexpected addition of the strawberry pendant from Swarovski, she wore a matching cocktail ring – paired with a strawberry-pink manicure – for good measure. Elegant and a touch offbeat, although the tailoring stayed in the wardrobe this year, Julia Roberts is still looking to shake up the stylebook wherever possible.
