Man killed in Chadderton crash named as heartbroken wife pays tribute to ‘best friend and soulmate’

A man who died in a horror crash in Oldham has been named as Michael Margetson. It came as his wife posted a moving tribute following the tragedy.

Mr Margetson, known as Mickey, died following the smash on Broadway in Chadderton at around 5.22pm on Tuesday (March 17). The three-car crash happened at the entrance to Elk Mill retail park.

Emergency services raced to the scene and a large police cordon was put in place at the busy junction. Pictures showed three badly damaged cars – thought to have been a Mercedes, a Toyota Prius and a Ford – inside the cordon.

Greater Manchester confirmed a man aged in his 50s died, while an undisclosed number of other people in the three cars were also injured. The man who lost his life has now been named as Mr Margetson by his wife Diane.

It is understood he lived with his wife in Oldham. Paying tribute on Facebook, Ms Margetson wrote: “It’s with a heavy heart… my husband Mickey Margetson was involved in a serious car accident last night he sadly passed away with me holding his hand at the side of him.

“I have not only lost my husband I have lost my best friend my soul mate forever.”

In a statement issued via GMP, she added: “In loving memory of Michael Margetson. You weren’t just a part of our family you were the cornerstone. As a husband you were my rock, as a son, a source of pride the greatest storyteller and hug giver.

“Thank you for stepping up, filling our lives with joy, and loving us all so deeply. You are now back in your mother’s arms. You were not only my husband you were my best friend, my rock. Fly high my beautiful, I love you for ever, your loving wife, Diane.

“We kindly ask that everyone respect our family’s privacy at this difficult time and allow us the space to come together and support one another.”

Jemma Heaton wrote on Facebook: “R.i.p uncle Mickey Margetson gone way to soon such a horrible place we live in u will never be forgotten you was loved by many thinking of you Diane Margetson at this hard time ur not on ur own we are all here beside you and we love you lots.”

Lucas Nicholson posted: “Last night I received the news my grandad Mickey Margetson past [sic] away from a car accident that occurred next to elk mill honestly can’t believe it’s real RIP grandad I’ll see u again one day.”

GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit continues to investigate the crash. Officers want to speak to witnesses, or anyone with dash cam footage.

A GMP spokesperson said: “To help understand the full circumstances, the SCIU are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
