Mother of convicted rapist who was mistakenly released from jail speaks from hospital after chaotic re-arrest

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A 23-year-old Shelby County man is back behind bars after being mistakenly released from jail following a guilty plea to rape charges.

Cameron Brooks was accidentally freed Wednesday but was taken back into custody Thursday morning around 10 a.m., according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

His mother said she was assaulted by law enforcement during his re-arrest.

Brooks is the second inmate in three months to be released accidentally from the Shelby County Jail.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Brooks appeared in court Tuesday when an aggravated rape charge was dismissed. However, he faced another rape charge and pleaded guilty to that charge.

The sheriff’s office said the additional charge did not have a legal hold due to an issue caused by the Shelby County IT Department.

“They gave him a get-out-of-jail-free card,” said Melvia Anderson, Brooks’ mother.

Anderson spoke from the hospital after the incident, saying law enforcement assaulted her as her son was turning himself in.

“I’m numb, and I’m shocked that they did me like that,” Anderson said.

Anderson said she was frustrated by the confusion that led to the chaos outside the Shelby County Justice Center.

“We already knew it was a mistake; they knew it was a mistake, so why did they do excessive force like that?” Anderson said.

Anderson said her son could have fled after his release, but chose not to run.

“He could’ve ran. He got out, he could’ve ran, but he told them folks he ain’t running, they knew where he was at the whole time,” Anderson said. “If y’all wanted to come and get him, y’all should’ve came and got him. Y’all knew where he was at the whole time.”
