A Teacher’s Heroic Rescue: How One Man Saved a Puppy Trapped in a Sinking Crate — and Changed Both Their Lives
In early November, with the first sharp winds of winter sweeping across Illinois, a quiet afternoon of fishing at Kaufman Lake turned into a life-or-death rescue that would touch hearts across the community.
Bryant Fritz, a middle school science teacher at Next Generation School in Champaign and a lifelong dog lover, arrived at the lake expecting nothing more than a relaxing break outdoors. But moments after setting up his gear, something unusual in the water caught his eye—something that made his pulse quicken.
What he first thought was debris turned out to be a partially submerged crate. And then he saw the movement. A small black-and-white puppy was trapped inside, her head barely above the freezing water as she fought to stay alive.
A Split-Second Decision
“It was around 3 pm when I spotted the dog,” Fritz later shared. “Part of the crate was visible above the water, with her little head just above the surface.”

While filling out paperwork at the hospital, Fritz felt an unexpected but unmistakable connection with the puppy he had just saved.
“As I was writing, I realized—I wanted her to be part of my life,” he said.
He and his girlfriend, Krystal, chose the name Dory, inspired by the determined, lovable character from Finding Nemo. It fit perfectly—she didn’t quit in that water.
