Rock County sees spike in drug overdoses

Public health officials believe strong opioids or other drugs may be mixed in local supply

ROCK COUNTY, Wis. (WMTV) -Rock County Public Health has recorded a spike in drug overdoses over the last two days, with officials believing strong opioids or other drugs may be mixed in the local drug supply.

Lucas Oswalt with Rock County Public Health said the timing coincides with a period that can be especially difficult for people who use substances.

“It’s definitely a joyful time but it can also be a tough time for people who use substances,” he said.

Tracking overdose data

The county uses information from ambulance trips to gather data on overdose responses, among other data collection methods, and alerts the community when officials believe there may be a reason behind the increase.

“It seems there is something stronger than what people are expecting currently in the county,” Oswalt said.

He said no specific drug has been tracked down in this case yet.

Officials recommend people who decide to use substances test them with fentanyl test strips and have Narcan available.

Resources available

Online resources are available to find locations to pick Narcan or sign up for overdose spike alerts through the county’s website.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services also provides a map showing all locations in the state where people can pick up Narcan for free.

“I have friends who have struggled, I have family who has struggled and really there’s no shame in getting help — if you really love someone you want them to be well, this is the way to do it,” Oswalt said.

People struggling with substance use can find resources through their county’s public health department or call the “Don’t Use Alone” hotline at 1-800-484-3731.
