A routine traffic stop in El Paso on Jan. 1 escalated into a significant arrest when deputies discovered cocaine and an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

At approximately 6 a.m., deputies observed a black Chevrolet SUV run a red light at North Desert Blvd. and Westway Blvd.

The driver, identified as 35-year-old Oscar Gandarilla, initially failed to stop, and when he came to a complete stop near a residence on the 900 block of Antelope Rd., he attempted to walk away from the scene.

Deputies restrained Gandarilla after he resisted arrest.

Sheriff Oscar Ugarte commented, “This incident highlights how a simple traffic violation can quickly escalate when individuals choose to evade deputies and resist arrest.”

Gandarilla faces multiple charges, including Driving While Intoxicated with an Open Container, Evading Arrest, Resisting Arrest, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility with a bond set at $14,675.
