The story begins with a persistent rescue effort for a female Poodle, later named Tootsie. Tootsie had been wandering the streets since November, and despite many attempts to reach her, she remained incredibly wary and intelligent, successfully evading every trap set for her. Tootsie’s condition at the time was alarming: her fur was so severely matted and caked with mud that it obstructed her vision, effectively “blinding” her with her own coat.
A Rescue Built on Patience
After months of monitoring, the rescue team finally managed to safely trap Tootsie. Although she was initially terrified and trembling, she quickly sensed the humans were there to help and became remarkably calm. A rescuer comforted her, saying: “Your life is going to get a whole lot better, honey”.
Notably, it was discovered that Tootsie had recently had a litter, and the team had already managed to rescue all of her puppies previously. This made the effort to rescue the mother dog even more urgent to ensure the family could be reunited.
Comprehensive Medical Care
Tootsie was immediately taken to Poodle Rescue of Houston, a facility equipped with on-site veterinary staff. There, she underwent a full health examination:

Oral Exam: The vet found swelling and a laceration on her lip, likely from trauma or eating something sharp, and prescribed antibiotics.

Age Assessment: Based on her teeth and mammary development (indicating she had recently lactated), the vet estimated Tootsie to be just over a year old.

Testing: Fortunately, Tootsie tested negative for heartworm. She was also treated with Ivermectin to prevent mange and other parasites that might have been hiding in her matted coat.
A Stunning Transformation
The most moving part of the journey was the grooming process. The thick, carpet-like mats of fur were carefully removed using cool water to avoid causing her any pain. Beneath that dirty, neglected exterior was a small, beautiful Poodle with an incredibly friendly personality.
Once cleaned up, Tootsie no longer looked like a frightened stray. She became “fluffy” and alert, showing her true spirit and readiness for a new beginning.
A Happy Ending: The Reunion
The real miracle happened when Tootsie was adopted by the same family that had previously adopted one of her puppies. This reunion not only provided Tootsie with a home filled with love but also allowed her to be back with her offspring, making up for the difficult months spent on the streets.
