GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Officers in Gwinnett County were captured on video rescuing a boy with autism from a sewer drain.
According to a Facebook post, on Nov. 15, Central Precinct officers responded to Peachtree Ridge Park after receiving a call about a missing 5-year-old boy who has autism and wandered away from a playground.
Officers searched for the child for 40 minutes when Officer Hugley spotted that a fence around a retention pond had been pulled up.
In the post, the department says Hugley “followed his instinct,” went under the fence, and checked a sewer drain of a nearby neighborhood. Hugley called out to the boy and heard something in return.
Officer Nunez, who was also on scene, crawled through the sewer and found the boy a couple of hundred feet into the drain. While Nunez crawled through the sewer, Lt. Huggins found the nearest drain hole cover and directed them to his location.
Officers say the child was safely removed from the sewer without any injuries.
